Algae Extracts and Algae Dietary Supplements
Algae are fascinating organisms that have been used as valuable food sources for thousands of years. Whether from freshwater or seawater, they contain an impressive variety of nutrients: high-quality proteins, essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals, trace elements, chlorophyll, and phytochemicals. Algae extracts and microalgae such as Chlorella and Schizochytrium sp. are particularly popular as nature’s nutrient sources. Modern extraction methods allow these components to be concentrated and made available in algae dietary supplements—providing a natural and sustainable source of nutrients from the water.
We use microalgae and algae extracts in dietary supplements. These are carefully selected by our in-house scientific team. We consistently ensure strict quality controls, raw materials tested for contaminants, and the highest quality for all our algae products.
Why are algae and algae extracts beneficial for the body?
Algae are among the most nutrient-rich foods on Earth and are a true gift from nature. They contain a wealth of essential nutrients and are particularly notable for their high chlorophyll and micronutrient content. In addition, certain types of algae, such as the microalga Chlorella, promote natural internal cleansing by binding heavy metals and toxins.
Whether taken in their pure form as algae supplements or as algae extract—algae are a natural, holistic source of nutrition for your body.
High-Quality Nutrients from Algae
Algae provide a unique combination of valuable nutrients that are rarely found in this form in other foods. Particularly noteworthy is thevitamin B12content in chlorella, which contributes to normal blood formation, nervous system function, and healthyenergy metabolism. An adequate intake of vitamin B12—ideally through dietary supplements—is especially important for people who follow a plant-based diet.
Iodinefrom seaweed such as knotted kelp contributes to the normal functioning of the thyroid gland, the nervous system, and energy metabolism. In addition, algae such as the microalga Schizochytrium sp. containomega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), which support, for example, heart health, brain function, and vision. They are therefore a popular source of omega-3 forvegetarians and vegans. They are also a popular source ofbeta-carotene and astaxanthin, which are highly valued.
Astaxanthin: Natural Protection Against Oxidative Stress in Algae
Astaxanthin is a carotenoid derived from microalgae such as Haematococcus pluvialis. Microalgae store it when exposed to intense sunlight and, consequently, oxidative stress. This provides the algae with exceptional protection against oxidative stress—that is, against free radicals.
Oxidative stress is an imbalance between free radicals and protective antioxidants that can contribute to cell damage and aging. This oxidative stress also occurs daily in our bodies due to factors such as environmental influences and UV radiation.
Astaxanthin has the unique property that, due to its structure, it can exist in both fat-soluble and water-soluble environments. Our cells, too, have regions that are either fat-soluble or water-soluble.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Algae provide the body with essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll, proteins, and dietary fiber. For example, iodine contributes to the normal functioning of the thyroid gland, the nervous system, and energy metabolism. And the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA support heart and brain function as well as vision.
There are many different types of algae supplements available in powder, tablet, or oil form. Among the best known are microalgae such as chlorella, spirulina, astaxanthin, knotted kelp, Schizochytrium sp., and AFA algae.
All three types of algae are very popular. While chlorella supports the body's natural detoxification process, spirulina provides plenty of protein and other nutrients. In addition, astaxanthin acts as an antioxidant.
Chlorella is a freshwater algae rich in chlorophyll that is particularly effective for internal cleansing. Spirulina is a blue-green microalgae with a high protein and nutrient content.
