Shilajit — the traditional, mineral-rich primordial substance
Shilajit, also known as Mumijo, is a naturally occurring, mineral-rich, humus-like substance. It contains all known minerals—including trace elements—as well as other compounds. This makes it unique. Depending on the region, its name translates roughly as “oil of the mountains” or “mountain sap.” It is found exclusively in the Central Asian foothills of the Himalayas and the Altai Mountains, as well as in some mountainous regions of southern Kazakhstan.
Mumijo is formed from over 6,500 different plants, some of which are now extinct. These plants were compressed by the weight of the mountains. It has been used in Ayurveda for at least 3,000 years. It is available in convenient capsules, such as ourPro Shilajit.
The Formation of Shilajit/Mumijo
The exact formation processof shilajit, ormumijo, is not yet known and may vary depending on the site where it is found. What is certain, however, is thatprolonged and intense exposure to sunlight and clean airare necessary.A specific range of plants mustalso be present—namely, higher plants that produce milky sap. This is a prerequisite for the formation of the thick, viscous, yet highly water-soluble Mumijo matrix. Mumijo cannot be cultivated; it can only be found and collected. The sites where it is found arealways locatedat an elevation of at least 1,000 meters, and sometimes as high as 4,000 meters above sea level.
