Little known but indispensable: Glutathione is one of the body’s most effective antioxidants and, on top of that, a crucial component of cellular waste disposal. It helps the liver eliminate toxins and metabolic waste and protects DNA and cells from oxidative stress caused by free radicals. Furthermore, glutathione is important for the function of various immune cells and therefore strengthens the immune system.
When oxidative stress increases due to environmental toxins, UV radiation, or physical and mental stress, the body uses up more glutathione. The body’s need for glutathione also increases with age and in cases of chronic illness.
Pro Glutathione provides you with the building blocks of glutathione—cysteine and glycine—and also supplies selenium, which protects cells and is also required for glutathione metabolism. This gives you the perfect combination to naturally boost your glutathione levels, relieve the burden on your excretory organs, and better protect yourself against oxidative stress.
Along with glutamine and glycine, cysteine is one of the three amino acids from which glutathione is formed. An adequate supply of this amino acid is particularly important because cysteine is easily oxidized to cystine in the gastrointestinal tract and is thus lost for glutathione production.
Pro Glutathion therefore provides cysteine in a stabilized form as N-acetylcysteine (chemically correct: N-acetyl-L-cysteine, also known as NAC). The attached acetyl group protects the cysteine from oxidation; it is released in the liver and is available for glutathione synthesis.
The amino acid glycine is not only necessary for the synthesis of glutathione, but also plays a direct role in the breakdown of toxins and metabolic byproducts in the liver. Although cysteine is the limiting factor for glutathione synthesis, the body’s own synthesis of glycine is not always sufficient to replenish glutathione stores.
Clinical studies have shown that a combination of glycine and N-acetylcysteine reliably increases low glutathione levels, thereby reducing oxidative stress.
Glutathione relies on selenium to perform its role as a free radical scavenger. This trace element is a key cofactor for certain enzymes (glutathione peroxidases) that are responsible for glutathione’s antioxidant function.
Pro Glutathione contains a combination of two sources of selenium: sodium selenite and selenomethionine. Your body can absorb the inorganic sodium selenite particularly quickly, while the organically bound selenomethionine serves as a storage form. This ensures you have an optimal supply of selenium.

Glutathione is one of the most important antioxidants within the body’s cells. It effectively protects against oxidative stress, supports the immune system, and helps the liver break down toxins. Glutathione is a so-called tripeptide that the body can synthesize from the three amino acids cysteine, glycine, and glutamic acid. Obtaining it through diet, however, is difficult because glutathione is largely destroyed in the digestive tract. When the body’s needs are increased, it therefore makes sense to support the body’s own synthesis of glutathione and provide it with the necessary nutrients.
Glutathione plays a role in numerous metabolic processes in the body. A glutathione deficiency can therefore cause a wide range of nonspecific symptoms. Typical symptoms of a glutathione deficiency include general exhaustion, chronic fatigue, and an increased susceptibility to infections. A glutathione deficiency can also impair liver health and lead to oxidative stress, which in turn is associated with numerous health problems. You can determine your own glutathione level through a blood test.
Oxidative stress is a condition in which more free radicals are produced in the body than can be neutralized by the body’s own antioxidants. Free radicals are highly reactive oxygen and nitrogen compounds that damage healthy cells and thereby contribute to premature aging and disease. They are produced naturally as a byproduct of metabolism, but also as a result of external factors. Harmful factors such as smoking and alcohol, an unhealthy diet, environmental toxins, or UV radiation promote increased production of free radicals and thus oxidative stress.
Glutathione is found in small amounts in fresh foods such as broccoli, spinach, asparagus, avocado, and watermelon. However, because it is sensitive to heat and storage, its content decreases rapidly. More important for meeting our needs are so-called precursors—the building blocks from which the body produces glutathione itself. These include the amino acids Cysteine, glycine, and glutamine, which are found primarily in protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs, and legumes.
