Shilajit — the traditional, mineral-rich primordial substance
Shilajit, also known as Mumijo, is a naturally occurring, mineral-rich, humus-like substance. It contains all known minerals, including trace elements, as well as other substances. This makes it unique. Depending on the region, its name translates to something like “oil of the mountains” or “mountain sap.” It is found exclusively in the Central Asian foothills of the Himalayas and the Altai Mountains, as well as in some mountainous regions of southern Kazakhstan.
Mumijo is formed from over 6,500 different plants, some of which are now extinct. These plants were compressed by the weight of the mountains. It has been used in Ayurveda for at least 3,000 years. It is available in convenient capsules, such as our Pro Shilajit.
The Formation of Shilajit/Mumijo
The exact formation process of shilajit, or mumijo, is not yet known and may vary depending on the site where it is found. What is certain, however, is that prolonged and intense exposure to sunlight and clean air are required. A specific range of plants must also be present—namely, higher plants that produce milky sap. This is a prerequisite for the formation of the thick, viscous, yet highly water-soluble Mumijo matrix. Mumijo cannot be cultivated; it can only be found and collected. The sites where it is found are always located at an altitude of at least 1,000 meters, sometimes even 4,000 meters above sea level.
Mumijo — What's Included
Mumijo, this unique resin-like substance, is one of the most nutrient-rich natural products on Earth. It’s no wonder it has long been used in the Ayurvedic tradition.
Mumijo is composed of nearly 100 different components. At least 85 of these are minerals in ionic form. These include well-known minerals such as selenium, iron, iodine, boron, and phosphorus.
But it also includes numerous lesser-known ones, such as barium, bromine, cesium, cobalt, europium, gadolinium, germanium, gold, iridium, lanthanum, lithium, lutetium, neodymium, nickel, osmium, palladium, platinum, rhenium, rubidium, scandium, silver, strontium, sulfur, thallium, tellurium, titanium, tungsten, yttrium, tin, and zirconium.
In addition to minerals, Mumijo contains other substances, such as humic and fulvic acids, triterpenes, amino acids, plant waxes, and polyphenols.
