Fermented iron from the koji fungus

Iron is essential for blood formation, oxygen transport, and the supply of energy to cells. A deficiency therefore primarily causes paleness, fatigue, and weakness. Women are usually the ones affected, but

including vegetarians and vegans. In women, this is due to menstruation and pregnancy; in those on a meat-free diet, it is due to the low bioavailability of plant-based iron.

Anyone who has ever needed to take supplemental iron knows this: Common supplements containing iron sulfate and other divalent iron salts (Fe²⁺) often upset the stomach and intestines. They release the trace element quickly into the body—which makes them very efficient, on the one hand, but irritates the mucous membranes in the digestive tract, on the other. Although plant-based iron is better tolerated, it is hardly absorbed at all, since it is predominantly present in the trivalent form (Fe³⁺) and is tightly bound.

Highly bioavailable and well-tolerated iron

A noble mold makes it possible: Our iron comes from a unique, patented fermentation process using the koji mold Aspergillus oryzae. In this process, a starter culture made from rice and the koji fungus is enriched with ferrous sulfate, which the fungus incorporates into its cells during the subsequent fermentation. The iron embedded in this way has been shown to be released in the body much more slowly—and thus more gently—than the isolated iron sulfate often prescribed for iron deficiency.¹ Nevertheless, it enters the bloodstream in an equally high concentration, thus offering a naturally derived alternative to plant-based iron sources that are also well-tolerated but have very low bioavailability.

No Chance for Free Radicals

The rapid release and absorption of conventional iron can exceed the binding capacity of the iron-transport protein transferrin, especially at high doses. The result is excess free iron in the blood, which promotes the formation of oxygen radicals. The steady and slow absorption of our fermented iron effectively prevents such excessive iron uptake.

Premium Formula: Fermentation Meets Vitamin Complex

The fermentation of rice with Aspergillus fungi (koji fermentation) has a centuries-old tradition in Asia, particularly in Japan, and serves as the basis for the preparation of soy sauce, miso, and sake, among other products. Aspergillus oryzae has been granted GRAS status (GRAS = generally considered safe) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is therefore classified as safe.

Vitamin C helps the body absorb more iron from food. It converts trivalent iron into readily available bivalent iron, thereby increasing the amount of iron absorbed from plant-based foods. Pro Ferra Ferment contains stomach-friendly, buffered vitamin C in the form of sodium L-ascorbate.

Vitamins B2, B6, B12, and folic acid, together with iron, provide energy and support blood formation. In Pro Ferra Ferment, vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid are already present in their active coenzyme form, which the body can utilize directly.

Iron Fact Sheet

Iron in the Body

Iron is essential for blood formation, oxygen transport, and the supply of energy to cells. It also plays an important role in the immune system and in cognitive function. The human body contains about 3 to 5 grams of iron, roughly 80% of which is active, functional iron: in the hemoglobin of red blood cells, in the myoglobin of muscle cells, and in iron-containing enzymes, including those in the mitochondrial respiratory chain. The remaining 20% is stored as ferritin and hemosiderin in the liver and spleen or circulates in the blood bound to transferrin.

Heme iron vs. non-heme iron

The body obtains iron exclusively from food, in the form of heme iron and non-heme iron. The divalent iron (Fe²⁺) bound in the heme molecule—from which the term derives—is found exclusively in animal-based foods, particularly in meat, sausage, and liver.

Plants primarily provide non-heme iron. This is iron in an ionized, mostly trivalent form (Fe³⁺). However, trivalent iron must first be converted to divalent iron before it can be absorbed in the intestine and therefore has significantly lower bioavailability. Certain plant compounds, such as phytates, oxalates, and tannins, further inhibit iron absorption.

Deficiency or Increased Need

Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies worldwide. It most often affects women, but vegetarians and vegans are also at risk. In women, it is caused by menstruation and pregnancy; in those who follow a meat-free diet, it is due to the low bioavailability of plant-based iron.

Since too much iron can be harmful, high-dose supplements should only be taken if a deficiency has been diagnosed. An increased need for iron, on the other hand, can be easily met with a much lower-dose dietary supplement such as our Pro Ferra Ferment.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Pro Ferra Ferment It is suitable for anyone who wants to gently and effectively replenish their iron stores—especially women of childbearing age, pregnant women, breastfeeding women, as well as vegetarians and vegans. People with increased iron needs or a diagnosed deficiency can also benefit from this gentle and well-tolerated form of iron.

Many conventional iron supplements release iron very quickly. This can cause irritation in the gastrointestinal tract. Pro Ferra Ferment In contrast, iron that has been fermented using the koji fungus is released much more slowly, is particularly gentle on the stomach, and is highly bioavailable—without causing the typical digestive discomfort.

Pro Ferra Ferment It is particularly well tolerated because the iron is released slowly and evenly through fermentation with the koji fungus. This is gentle on the gastrointestinal tract—without the typical side effects that many people associate with conventional iron supplements.

Yes, Pro Ferra Ferment can be easily combined with other dietary supplements. It is particularly beneficial to combine it with Vitamin C, since it helps the body absorb iron—this is already in Pro Ferra Ferment included. Other vitamins and minerals can also be taken as supplements.

The duration of use depends on individual needs. If iron deficiency has been diagnosed, the supplement should be taken until iron stores are replenished. This can take several weeks to months. During specific life stages, such as pregnancy or breastfeeding, as well as in cases where long-term support is needed, it is recommended to discuss the duration of use individually with a therapist.

Vitamin C increases iron absorption from plant-based foods, thereby enhancing the effect. The B vitamins B2, B6, B12, and folate are important partners in iron metabolism: They promote blood formation, contribute to energy metabolism, and help reduce fatigue. These very vitamins are found in Pro Ferra Ferment already included—in an easily absorbable and active form.
