Incense

You’re probably most familiar with the resin from frankincense trees from church. There, it is burned during Masses and religious ceremonies as a symbol of purification, veneration, and the presence of God. In addition, burning incense is said to ward off negative energies and promote concentration.

For centuries, however, frankincense has also been traditionally used as a remedy—for example, to treat inflammation or to promote wound healing in Indian Ayurveda. To harvest frankincense, the bark of the frankincense tree is incised so that the resin can drip out and dry for harvesting. The color of the dried frankincense droplets or lumps ranges from rock candy brown to black, depending on the harvest. The extract is then derived from the resin and used in dietary supplements.

What is the function of phospholipids?

Phospholipids are phosphorus-containing fats that, for example, serve as the main component of membranes—the outer layers of cells and cell organelles—in the body. There, they exist as a bilayer, also known as a double membrane.

Phospholipids are also often used to improve the uptake of active ingredients into cells—that is, across the cell membrane—in short: to increase bioavailability. In this process, the phospholipids enclose the active ingredient like a sort of “mini-cell,” which is then referred to as a liposome. This liposome can then fuse directly with the cell membrane and release the active ingredient into the cell. This allows the substances to be absorbed much more effectively. This is ultimately where the term “liposomal” comes from—a term you’ve surely heard before—and now you know its exact meaning.
